Now I'm new to the interweb, but whilst searching around for trumpet related good stuff, I came across your exraordinary blog.
James, I'm 82 years old, born n bred in Detroit Michigan,and I have been playing the trumpet for exactly 75 years today!
It was on this day exactly 75 years ago that my father, also called Leroy Watkins came home from his job as a janitor at the local hospital carrying a brown paper bag, holding an old trumpet that had been given to him by a patient he'd befriended and who had just breathed his last breath and said goodbye to this wonderful world.
The patient was an old white man. A former soldier in the union army, 96 years old, who claimed to have studied with the legendary Philip Sousa, the most celebrated brass band leader in American Music.
My father kneeled down under watchful, ever loving gaze of my other- Delores Watkins, and handed this beautiful old horn to me. He said:
"Son, this is for you. Now you gotta treat this horn right, cos this horn here is full o' spirit!"
I held the horn, put it to my lips and......nothing came out! Now I know you know what I'm talking about brother!!
My mom and pops just laughed and laughed.
"Son," He said
" You just gotta practice. Every day. Remember, this here is a noble instrument. A trumept TRUMPETS and a drum DRUMS! ain't no other instrument can claim that!!"
Well, that was the beginning. I been b;lowin' ever since. With the best, and the worst! truth is, i fall somewhwere in between. But... if you'd care listen from time to time. I can show you how to get along better with the prince of horns..

At that tijme there was lots of work for musicians.There were great dance bands like Ted heath's which featured an incredible trumpeter called kenny baker.
Plus there was lots of Soul Bands like Georgie Fame's and Jimmy James. The Jazz scene was cookin' too with cats like Shake Keane and jimmy Deuchar blowing up a storm.
One thing I'll tell you now son is be humble. Humility will take you far when tackling the trumpet! and another thing- don't loook a gift horse in the mouth. There's some instruments you can go it aalone wityh. Others, well, you keep on keeping on young James and i'll kep on checkin in on you.
I can tell you a thing or two about how to play that horn baby.
